chili peppers suing Showtime over name of show
Jan 11 2008, 2:49 PM EST
I don't know if there are any thread about this already, but I wanted some other fans of the show's opinion on this. In November The Red Hot Chili Peppers made suit against Showtime and actually want all the money made by the show thus far. I used to be a Pepper fan but I find this so outrageous. I didn't start watching the show because I thought they were involved in any way, and if I had been one of those people who thought they were involved, after the first five minutes I would have realized my mistake. I haven't found any new info on this since they actually files the suit. Has anyone else heard anything? One would think they made enough money with that last album that had two discs for three good songs. I don't mean to insult the Chili Peppers, but this is ridiculous

They won't win. If someone had started a band and called it Red Hot Chili Peppers, they could sue. You *cannot* claim ownership of the name of a song. Just because the Peppers ain't so hot anymore doesn't mean they can demand someone else's money. Let them go make some themselves.

Yeah, every time they come on the radio, I immediately change the station. I think it's disgusting that they are claiming cash from someone else's inspiration. This is the best show ever on TV and shame on them for wanting a piece of the action. Once agina, I CAN'T WAIT for the new season. I've watching every episode of the first season so many times I can quote them :)

OK first off "Just because the Chili's ain't so hot anymore" ARE YOU HIGH? They won like 6 Grammies and at 44 years old could still run circles around the majority of the population and not to mention they f**kin rock on stage. I am one of those people how watched the show because i at least thought that there was something to do with the Peppers on it, and yeah I love the show, But come on for anybody that Knows anything about the Chili's they would recognize that they were ripping off not just the name, But so many other things , first off Hank calls Charlie's sec. "DANI CALIFORNIA" oh and "CHARLIE" another name of a song off their newest album Then there is the episode when Mia takes a direct quote from the song "Californication " It is the edge of western civilization. Plus lets not leave out that the web page for this show looks oddly familiar to the Chili Peppers web page. Plus when you try to look up the song on "iTunes" or any other online music store it will take you to the Pepper's artist page and list the sound track for the show on it . So yeah so they might not win the law suit but at least the vast amount of Chili Pepper fans that watched for the same reason I did won't be mislead anymore.

Nope, not high. At 42, I've been there, done that and I've also been around to see and hear much better bands than the Lukewarm Banana Peppers. If you feel you were misled, it's your own fault; it should have taken you exactly one episode to figure out that RHCP were nowhere to be found. If you still like the show, fine -- if you have issues, be the first in ten years to buy a RHCP album and knock yourself out. If you think the show's a ripoff because some names are the same, Massengil may now contact you. You did, after all, use "douche" in your screenname.

how long did it take you to come up with that "lukewarm" reply?Oh and thank you for noticing that I misspelled DOUCHE! Come on man it's a blog nobody spells things right half the time, oh yeah but you already know that "AGINA" and "I"V WATCHING EVERY EPISODE" Throw the first stone right? well at least the only reason I am replying to this is because of an Email notice and not because I have nothing better to do with my time than blog about a show (notice you take up most of the page) you also mentioned you have watched the episodes so many times that you can quote them. GET OUT OF THE HOUSE MAN! there are also "much better" shows on TV than this one. Really Dude MUCH BETTER are you sure you are 42 because that sounds like something that my 5 year old would say? 2 out of 8 found this valuable. Do you? |

Yawn. Yes, you're so special you're the only one who gets email notices. Yes, I have watched the episodes multiple times on several different nights on Showtime on Demand. (When you grow up and have a job -- when/if you learn to spell -- you can have "on demand", also....or maybe your Mom and Dad already have it.) Oh, and I'm definitely not a man -- or a DUDE. Geez.As a writer, I'm at my computer a lot. People DO spell correctly if they possess the intellect-- this isn't your phone's text messaging, which I'm sure is a disaster. Why do children think it's okay to be ignorant? ("Agina" and I've watching" were already explained as typos...but you'd know that if you knew how t spell, lol. Leaving the "e" off of a word is as blatantly dumb as adding an "e" to "tomato". Maybe you should go into politics. ) BTW, never engage one who's obviously more intelligent than you in a battle of the wits when you're obviously unarmed. (On to more interesting things, so go ahead and have the last word....oh, and word is "W-O-R-D".) 3 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

I would tell you to 'chill' at the risk of ripping off the peppers, but they did not invent 'californication'. The band has always been a personification of what California is all about, but they did not create that concept. They do not own it. They have contributed to pop culture and if they influence a writer or artist, well isn't that what they want? To leave a lasting impression? They should be flattered if someone thinks of them when they hear a word or phrase, not filing a lawsuit for money they didn't work to earn. If anyone was mislead, it really was their mistake. To say the makers of this show have intentially tried to use the Chili Peppers to attract viewers could have very well backfired as there are many who find them distasteful and maybe avoided the show for the same incorrect association. In his best selling bio, the lead singer goes into his extreme drug use and even had sex with a 14 yr old groupie. Now I know he is a clean family man now, but the point is there are just many people who may not have tuned in to the show because they thought the Peppers had something to do with it. 3 out of 4 found this valuable. You have said many things here that I, myself, believe. This may be one of the most dominant statements you made: "If anyone was mislead, it really was their mistake." Right on.

""OUCH"" sounds like I hit a sore spot. You say you are a writer (a writer for what this show maybe) oh sorry your not that intelligent. Did you really just rip off the Princess Bride for that comeback? A BATTLE OF WITS MY ASS. Are you Sicilian?? Oh by the way number cruncher(real job) not a writer so at least I have an excuse, What's yours? I feel bad for your editor you seem to have a lot of those so called typos (check your reply again) As for the remark of people possibly not watching the show for the thought of the Peppers being involved because they may find them distasteful. Well lets see in the first episode Hank fucks a 16 year old girl gets head in a church by a nun screws a married woman, then of course lets not forget doing coke of the ass of some chick, having a threesome with Charlie and having the girl blowing her load in Charlies face don't forget tapping every other thing on the planet that could possibly have a pussy but his daughter. And the Peppers are distasteful. Come on now, Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black? I do however believe that the main cause for this law suit is that they maybe felt like the show was getting pimped due to them because of the iTunes thing and a few of the other references made in the show. Its like when the immortal "Beatles" sued Apple Computers for using the name Apple associated with anything that had to do with music.(which dates back to when Apple Computers first came on the scene but that's a whole other story) The "Beatles" didn't make up the word Apple but their record company was named Apple. Anybody notice that iPods are just called iPods not " Apple iPods "anymore.

Wow it took a lot of time for you to come up with this "lukewarm" response. Are YOU a member of the RHCP?Quoted: "Well lets see in the first episode Hank fucks a 16 year old girl gets head in a church by a nun screws a married woman, then of course lets not forget doing coke of the ass of some chick, having a threesome with Charlie and having the girl blowing her load in Charlies face don't forget tapping every other thing on the planet that could possibly have a pussy but his daughter. And the Peppers are distasteful." Yes, I can tell it offended you immensely. That's why you can remember every single detail, LOL. Typical of many groups of people. "Ewww, that S-E-X is so GROSS." <Coninues to watch every week..or peep into windows, or molest little boys, whatever.> I've heard words just like yours from certain groups before. Hypocrite! And I didn't say RHCP were distasteful. I said they are mediocre and lukewarm at best. Now piss off and leave everyone alone. Steven King and I have to get back to our "not-real" jobs while you go push a pencil. (Been there, done that -- sucks A-cup boob.) Do you find this valuable? |

15. RE: chili peppers suing Showtime over name of show

I’m reluctant to willfully slide in between this holy war here, but I thought I might as well add my opinion. First of all, I am not a fan of RHCP (this is the most polite way I can say this). In fact, I basically go out of my way to avoid anything if I believe it might be slightly attached to them. I watched this show, so that should prove that almost no one should equate it with them. True, the show has some pretty loud music industry references (one example being that Hank’s books are all named after Slayer albums), but I think you’re reading far too much into it if you’re actually finding RHCP connotations within the scripts. It’s a show. Writers get their ideas from everywhere; music, classic literature, porn, etc. I would hope they aren’t stealing from the extremely archaic and simplistic lyrics of RHCP (ok, this was a bit dogmatic), but who knows, and who cares. The show is good. And by the way, having two corporations with the same name (the Beatles Apple and the computer company) is completely different than an album title and a show title. In fact, I can think of a few examples of identical movie titles: (Blown Away (Corey and Cory movie) and Blown Away (Jeff Bridges), Kicking and Screaming (Will Ferrell) and Kicking and Screaming (Noah Baumbach). I’m no lawyer, but I’m almost positive that song, movie, and show titles are not protected by the same laws that protect say, a band name, or a corporation or LLC. Tell RHCP to stop whining, and tell their singer to stop over-annunciating and to put on a shirt.

When I read my email notice, I almost didn't bother to come to this site, since I am sincerely bored, lol. But you are correct. There cannot be a copright to things such as a book title or song name. I'm sure there will be more of the above nonsensical dribble posted from the less enlightened, but now that two people have chimed in with intelligent input, I shall move along. <whistles happily while leaving>.

Yo douche--you missed my point. and I am not by any means judging your intelligence. What I am saying is this, for every fan the peppers have, there is someone who finds them distasteful. for every five people that turned on this show because they thought it had something to do with the peppers, there are just as many who would have avoided it for the same reason. I know what the show contains but I am a big girl and I can handle it. I like some of the peppers stuff, but not all of it. I hate the fact that they would file a suit over the name of a show. I lost any respect that I had for them, and I realize they couldn't care less about that.

Shit, you people are cracking me the hell up. Who knew I could cause such sheer entertainment by simply posting a little comment. I really pissed you people off. Hell I can't stop giggling!! I was just dicking around. And why do you care if he has his shirt on or off, What did he turn you down to fuck the 14 year old, NO NO I'm just kidding sorry that was mean. Sometimes I have the verbal shits. You do have a good point. I think there might be more than meets the eye on this law suit thing. If you are truly interested in what is really going on, go to the Rolling Stone web site and do the research in the rock and roll daily section it will link you to tmz and you can read the court documents. I understand what you mean by people not liking the same things. I don't get the freeking appeal that bands like "U2" and "Matchbox 20" and "Nickel Back" hold for people. but millions love them and I don't get it.
